A summon just died.

Sariel had all but killed her, and Aria suffered for a while before Ramadas finished her off. The rifts that surrounded her body... he remembered the same ones had appeared all over Maria’s during their first fight.

‘Maria could have died just as easily.’

Reim felt sick to his stomach.

Sariel’s hand grasped his gently, and despite everything he did, Reim was still thankful that his summon was always by his side and that he would go against his own wishes if it meant saving his life.

Faenor had left the room, along with his entourage, except for the two teenagers who looked identical to Feanor.

Reim turned around to face them.

“Hello?”

They were identical blonde boys with blue eyes that looked almost gray. Both wore white cloaks over dresses of the same color, with a few gold markings to decorate them. They were both also much older than him.

“I am Fin, and he’s Fahner. We’re from the same family as Master Faenor. He has assigned us to be your healers.” The shorter-haired twin said. A symbol of the Empire—twin diamonds with a star in the middle—was enclosed in a red orb and hung around his neck. Reim recognized that only residents of the Capitol could own the necklace.

“Also,” Fahner, the one with longer hair, pulled out a box from his white robe. “Please wear this. It pains me to see a member of the Auro family like yourself wearing so little protection.”

He held out his hand to receive the box. Inside were a bracelet, a ring, and a necklace, all carved with exquisite runes.

“Please put them on.” Fin requested, smiling before bowing to Reim.

He was supposed to wear fancy-looking accessories. For free! Reim excitedly looked at Sariel, who looked skeptical.

Without further ado, Reim had put them on.

Fin could no longer hold his laughter after Reim had put on the last piece of jewelry. “I can’t believe it, Fahner. He actually wore them!”

Reim narrowed his eyes at Fin. “What’s so funny?”

“Ah, Reim, we’ve been told you were naive, but I didn’t think you’d put them on without asking what they were.” He turned to the long-haired twin. “We have our work cut out for us, Fahner.”

Immediately, Reim tried to pry off the jewelry, panic setting in when he could not. “What are these?! They’re stuck! Sariel, what do I do?!”

Fahner approached him and gently touched his hand. “Please do not worry. We were only having a bit of fun. These are not harmful.”

Fin wiped his tears and smiled pleasantly once again. “Fahner’s right. The ring is a tracking charm, which would allow Master Faenor to always know where you are. As his apprentice, he wouldn’t want you to get lost,” The boy’s smile turned mischievous once more. “Or run away.”

“He’s joking.” Fahner drawled as he pointed to the necklace. “That one is for protection so that you’d be relatively safe from harm.”

When the two offered no more explanation, Reim raised his hand, gesturing to the bracelet. “And this one?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.”
